History of Acapulco

The area around Acapulco was inhabited by Nahasu Indians around 3000 B.C.
and there exist references to trade in ancient Chinese texts. The city fell along
with the Aztec Empire to Spaniard Hernan Cortes in 1521.

The region retained its importance as a world trading port for the next 400 years
and during that time became a haven for pirates including Sir Francis Drake.
Acapulco began its transformation to that of a vacation destination in the 1920's
when the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII, visited the bay on a fishing expedition.

Wealthy Mexicans, American writers, Hollywood Stars and European
jet-setters soon flocked to Acapulco. It was here that Elizabeth Taylor
married Mike Todd, John F. Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot honeymooned,
and Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Harry Belafonte and Baron de Rothschild
became regulars. Today, Acapulco is one of the most exciting places in the
world attracting those who love to play all day and stay up all night!

Acapulco at Night

Whether it is in fresh water, in the Coyuca lagoon, or in the salt water of Acapulco bay, this is one of the best places in the world to water-ski. Since the time of Don Miguel Aleman the water-ski shows of Acapulco, with their risky jumps, somersaults and turns performed by athletes from all over the world, make the
public hold its breath.

around the bay.
